Important Considerations When Buying A New Home

If you are in the market for a new home, there are some often over looked details to consider.  Whether you want an existing home, or are thinking of building a new home consider these important factors:

Location

Are you the type of person who wants to be at work in 15 minutes, or are you someone who doesn’t mind a long commute.  Do you need easy access to the freeway?  Do you need to have shopping close by?  With today’s economy, perhaps you’d prefer a pedestrian lifestyle where you can bike or walk to work and the grocery store.  Are there schools close by?  Maybe you’d like to be close enough for your kids to walk to school, or maybe you don’t want to be around the 15mph school zones that slow down your morning commute.   Is the neighborhood close to a power facility, fire station or airport?  The added noise that comes with living close to an airport or fire station may not be appealing to  you. It’s important to consider the  seemingly unimportant details that may become a hassle once you move in.

Weather Proof Your Home

In these days of seemingly increasing natural disasters, think about having a basement or a storm shelter if you are in a tornado prone area.  Are you in a flood zone?  Make sure any trees near the home you want are in good conodition and not in danger of falling.  If you live in earthquake country make sure your home has been retro-fitted.  Don’t let a disaster destroy your life – think in advance and prepare accordingly.

Size of Home

All over America the trend has been bigger is better.  But is it really?  With bigger comes bigger utility bills.  It cost alot to cool and heat a large home.  Can you afford to hire a maid to clean this huge house or are you planning to do it yourself.  Do you want your young children sleeping clear across the other side of the house or on another floor?  If they call for you in the middle of the night, will you hear them?
